Only in NYC: Lady
Liberty meets the thankful masses By Olivia Barker Since winning the National Statue of Liberty Look-Alike Contest in 1986, Jennifer Stewart has made a career of glopping on green paint and transforming herself into Living Liberty at trade shows and corporate parties. But in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, her job has becoming a calling. New Yorkers, grieving over one fallen icon, are looking up to another -- Stewart and her towering torch. During the past three weeks, Stewart has headed out in her mop wig and laundry-basket crown to the vigils in Manhattan's Union Square and the firehouse in her Brooklyn neighborhood. Folks stop to pose for pictures and drop a dollar in her bucket. So far, she has collected and distributed more than $8,000 to the New York Fire Department and American Red Cross. Her goal? A symbolic $11,000. "This one young mother, I'll never forget her face," says the 40ish Stewart, who prefers to say she's 115 years old. "She came up and said, "I'm really glad to see you."
